General questions
How much does window replacement cost in Fort Wayne?
Nationally, expect $300 to $2,100 a window installed; the average is about $850. We'll give you an exact number after we measure, because the size, the frame you pick and the shape of the old opening all change it. Prices by frame are on our window replacement in Fort Wayne page.
What does new siding cost?
Nationally, a typical 2,000 sq ft house costs $8,500 to $20,000 to re-side, and the material you pick moves it most. We measure your walls and price each option you're weighing, side by side. If you're comparing siding contractors, ask each one to price the same siding, house wrap and trim so the numbers line up. Prices by material are on the siding replacement in Fort Wayne page.
Are your estimates free?
Yes. For a window or siding job, we come out, measure and put a price in writing for free, and you're never obligated to hire us. For a small repair far out, such as Warsaw or Huntington, we'll tell you about any trip charge before we come.
Should I do windows and siding at the same time?
If both are due, doing them together lets us tie each new window into the new house wrap while the wall is open. If you'd rather start with one, we'll tell you which can wait and why.
My house was built before 1978. Does that matter?
It does. Federal rules require lead-safe work for any window replacement on a home built before 1978, with plastic down and a HEPA clean-up. We'll go over what that means for your house at the estimate.
Is there still a tax credit for new windows?
Not for windows installed in 2026; the federal credit ended after 2025. If NIPSCO is your gas company, its $50-per-pane storm window rebate runs through November 30, 2026, and we'll help with the paperwork.
Bluffton
Is a permit needed to replace siding in Bluffton?
Siding isn't on Bluffton's building-permit list. If the job also involves structural changes, check with the building department.
Can old wood windows in a Villa North house be kept?
Often, yes. Sound sash can be repaired, re-glazed and covered with a low-E storm, which keeps the original look. Rotted sills or broken frames are the usual reasons to replace.
Columbia City
My 1990s windows are fogging. Replace or repair?
If only a few are fogged and the frames work, replace the sealed glass. If most of them are failing, or the sashes won't stay open, whole-window replacement starts to make more sense.
Who issues permits in Columbia City?
The Whitley County Building Department, for the city and the rest of the county.
Decatur
Does a window contractor have to register in Decatur?
Yes. The city's permit form requires contractors to register and to hold liability insurance of $500,000 or more.
Is the Decatur Homesteads under local review?
It's on the National Register. It has no local review board that we know of, but ask the city before changing window sizes or siding on a Homesteads house.
Huntington
Do you come out to Huntington?
Yes, window and siding jobs in Huntington are a regular trip for us. For a one-panel repair, we'll mention any trip charge when you call.
Is my house in Huntington's local historic district?
Only Drover Town and 15 single sites are under local review. A National Register listing on its own doesn't mean you need the board's approval. Call the city to check an address.
Kendallville
Do I need a permit to replace windows in Kendallville?
Not for windows replaced at the same size. If a window is being made larger, the city requires a permit.
Can I re-side in the middle of winter?
Yes, with vinyl or prefinished boards, as long as the installer follows the cold-weather gaps. Siding that will be painted on site waits for warmer, dry days.
New Haven
Does re-siding a house in New Haven need a permit?
Yes. New Haven uses the Allen County Building Department, and the county's residential permit guide lists siding as permitted work.
My New Haven house was built in the 2000s. Are the windows due?
Not on age alone. Check for fog between panes, drafts at the sash and sashes that won't stay up. One or two failed seals can be fixed with new glass instead of new windows.
Van Wert
Do you serve Van Wert, Ohio?
Yes, Van Wert is part of our service area. Ohio has no state license for window or siding work, but inside city limits the contractor must be registered with the City of Van Wert before a permit is issued, so ask to see that registration.
Do I need a permit to replace windows in Van Wert?
Yes, inside city limits. The city's permit form lists windows, siding, doors and roofs under exterior alteration or repair, with a fee based on the job's value.
Can I cancel a window contract I signed at my kitchen table?
Yes, until midnight of the third business day under Ohio's home solicitation law and the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule. Cancel in writing and keep a copy.
Warsaw
Do you come out to Warsaw?
Yes. Warsaw is the far west end of our map, so for a small repair we'll tell you about any trip charge before we come.
Do I need a permit to re-side my house in Warsaw?
Not inside city limits, according to the city building department, unless windows are being replaced as part of the job. Outside the city, ask the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission.
Which windows suit a lake house?
For a year-round home, the same ENERGY STAR Northern-zone windows as anywhere in the area: a U-factor of 0.22 or lower. Large picture windows facing the water cost more per opening because of their size and the labor to set them.
Glass block & stained glass
Is glass block warm enough for an Indiana basement?
Warmer than the single-pane steel windows many old basements still have, because block is thicker and seals tight in the opening. A vent panel, if you add one, is the only part that opens.
Is a glass block window a quick job?
A prefab basement unit is: it goes in like any other window once the old one is out. Custom block laid in mortar takes longer and has to set before it's sealed.
Can a stained glass window be energy efficient?
Yes, if it's set between panes of a sealed window or behind a storm. A bare leaded panel is single glass and loses heat like one.
Does lead-safe work apply to basement windows?
Yes, on a house built before 1978. EPA treats every window replacement on those homes as covered work, basement windows included.
Siding repair
Can one vinyl panel be replaced without taking the wall apart?
Usually yes. Vinyl panels hook into the one below, so we unhook the panels above with a small zip tool, swap the damaged piece and lock them back in.
Is a crack in vinyl siding urgent?
Not an emergency, but don't leave it for a season. Water and wind-driven rain get behind a cracked panel, and cold makes vinyl more brittle, so small cracks can grow.
When should I replace instead of repair?
Replace the siding when repairs are scattered around the house, the panels are brittle or faded unevenly, or the wall behind is soft in several places. See siding replacement in Fort Wayne for whole-house costs.
Can you price a repair from photos?
Often, yes, for small repairs: send a wide shot of the wall and a close-up of the damage. Rot and water damage need us to press on the wood in person.
Siding replacement
What makes new siding last in Indiana?
Flashing at every window, door and roof line does the most, because water that gets behind siding is what rots the wall. We take as much care with the flashing as with the siding you can see.
Can new siding go over old siding?
Sometimes, over flat and sound siding, and it saves the $1,000 to $2,500 tear-off. You give up the chance to see and fix the wall underneath, and some makers' warranties require the old siding off. Ask what the product's instructions say.
Does insulated vinyl siding make a difference?
Yes, a little: foam bonded to the back of each panel adds some insulation over the studs and makes the panel lie flatter. It costs more per square foot than plain vinyl.
What's the best time of year to re-side?
Any season can work for vinyl and prefinished boards, which go up in cold weather too, with wider gaps for vinyl, while fiber cement and wood painted on site do best in dry weather. Spring through fall is the busiest stretch.
Does my homeowners insurance cover siding?
If hail or a windstorm did the damage, your policy may pay for it. Take photos before anything is removed, and we'll write up an estimate you can hand the adjuster.
Soffit & fascia
Can fascia be replaced without a new roof?
Yes. The gutters come off, the rotted boards are cut out and replaced, and the drip edge at the roof's edge is checked. The shingles stay.
Why does my soffit keep getting animals?
Rotted corners and loose panels give squirrels and birds an opening. New panels close it, and a screen behind the vents keeps them out of the attic.
Do soffit and fascia need lead-safe work?
On a house built before 1978, often yes. Old fascia and soffit boards are usually painted, and removing more than 20 square feet of painted surface outside brings in EPA's lead-safe rules.
Is wrapping fascia in aluminum a good idea?
Over sound wood, yes: it ends the painting. Over rotted wood it hides the rot, so the soft boards should be replaced first.
Storm windows
Do storm windows help in a Fort Wayne winter?
Yes, over single-pane windows: a storm adds a second layer of glass and a sealed air space that cuts drafts and the cold you feel near the glass. Low-E storms do the most, which is why they're the ones utilities reward.
Can storm windows go on vinyl replacement windows?
They can, but there's little reason to: a modern double-pane window already has the sealed air space a storm adds. Storms pay off over single-pane wood or steel windows.
Will storms hurt my old wood windows?
Not if they drain. An exterior storm needs open weep holes at the bottom so water that gets behind it runs out instead of sitting on the sill.
Do I need lead-safe work for storm windows?
Only if the install disturbs painted surfaces on a pre-1978 house beyond EPA's small-job limits: 6 square feet in a room or 20 square feet outside. Screwing a storm to the frame usually doesn't, but scraping and repainting the sill first does.
Window replacement
How long does window replacement take?
Inserts are the quicker job because the inside trim stays on; full-frame takes longer because each opening is stripped, flashed and trimmed again. We put the number of working days in your written quote.
Can windows be replaced in winter in Fort Wayne?
Yes. Each opening is open only while its own window is swapped.
Should I repair or replace a foggy window?
Repair it if the frame and sash are sound: new sealed glass usually runs $75 to $250 a window. Replace it when the frame is rotted, the sash won't operate, or several windows are failing at once.
Is there a tax credit for replacement windows in 2026?
No. The federal 25C credit ended for windows installed after December 31, 2025. Indiana's current home energy rebates don't list windows either.
Do I need a permit to replace windows in Fort Wayne?
Not usually for a same-size window: Allen County's residential permit guide doesn't list window replacement. Making an opening bigger or cutting a basement egress window is structural work that needs a permit. In a local historic district, the city's approval comes first.
Wood, cedar & board-and-batten
Is cedar worth the extra cost over pine?
Usually, yes: cedar resists rot and insects better than pine and moves less as it wets and dries, which is why it's used for shakes. It costs more, and it still needs a finish to keep its color.
Can board-and-batten go on just part of the house?
Yes. Gables, an entry wall or a porch are common spots, with lap siding elsewhere. The two meet at trim boards, and we'll plan the layout with you.
Does wood siding need lead-safe work?
Putting up new wood doesn't. Removing or cutting old painted siding on a house built before 1978 does, once more than 20 square feet of painted surface is disturbed outside.
How is engineered wood different from real wood?
Engineered wood is wood strands bonded with resin and sold primed or prefinished. It costs less than cedar and comes in lap, panel and board-and-batten styles.
