Window replacement and siding in Van Wert, Ohio
In Van Wert, Ohio, window replacement and siding both need a city building permit, and Ohio law gives you three business days to cancel a contract you sign at home.
Van Wert's permit and fee
The City of Van Wert's building permit form lists roof, siding, windows and doors under exterior alteration or repair. The fee goes by project value: $20 for a job between $5,000 and $10,000, plus $2 for each $1,000 above $10,000. A $16,000 re-side, for example, would carry a $32 permit.
The form needs a Van Wert registration number for the general contractor, so a contractor from Indiana has to register with Van Wert before the permit is issued. The Engineering Department is at 515 East Main Street (419-238-5775).
Ohio rules that apply
Ohio licenses only a few commercial trades at the state level, and windows and siding aren't among them. The federal lead-safe rule works the same as in Indiana, run directly by the EPA.
The largest share of pre-1980 homes on our map
Nearly 75% of Van Wert's homes were built before 1980, and only about 8% since 2000. The median home dates to 1956. Any window replacement on a pre-1978 house needs an EPA lead-safe certified firm, and tearing off old siding can expose painted wood that brings the same rule in.
