Storm windows in Fort Wayne

Storm windows let you keep the old wood sash on your Fort Wayne house and stop the drafts, and we fit them inside or out.

When storm windows make more sense than new windows

Storms fit houses whose original windows still work: old-growth wood sash in a 1920s bungalow, leaded glass you want to keep, or a historic district where replacement windows need approval. They also fit a tight budget: ten storms cost about what four average replacement windows do.

They don't fix a rotted sill, a broken sash cord or a window that won't open. Those get repaired first, and we can take care of that too.

How much storm windows cost in Fort Wayne

Nationally, most storm window projects run $1,505 to $2,737, around $2,090 on average, with small jobs near $800 and whole houses of custom units past $8,000. Custom sizes, low-E glass and triple-track frames that hold a screen raise the price per window.

The NIPSCO storm window rebate

If NIPSCO is your gas company, it pays $50 per pane for ENERGY STAR low-E storm windows in 2026, for up to six per address a year. The windows have to be bought and installed between January 1 and November 30, 2026, and the application is due within 60 days of the install. Installs after October 31 need the form postmarked by November 30. There's no NIPSCO rebate for replacement windows.

Storms in a Fort Wayne historic district

In West Central, Williams-Woodland Park, Shawnee Place and Columbia Avenue, the city's preservation guidelines ask for narrow-profile storm windows with the frame color matched to the sash. Bare mill-finish aluminum is listed as not appropriate. Storms seen from the street need a Certificate of Appropriateness, which is free, and most are approved by staff.

Storm window questions

Do storm windows help in a Fort Wayne winter?

Yes, over single-pane windows: a storm adds a second layer of glass and a sealed air space that cuts drafts and the cold you feel near the glass. Low-E storms do the most, which is why they're the ones utilities reward.

Can storm windows go on vinyl replacement windows?

They can, but there's little reason to: a modern double-pane window already has the sealed air space a storm adds. Storms pay off over single-pane wood or steel windows.

Will storms hurt my old wood windows?

Not if they drain. An exterior storm needs open weep holes at the bottom so water that gets behind it runs out instead of sitting on the sill.

Do I need lead-safe work for storm windows?

Only if the install disturbs painted surfaces on a pre-1978 house beyond EPA's small-job limits: 6 square feet in a room or 20 square feet outside. Screwing a storm to the frame usually doesn't, but scraping and repainting the sill first does.
